when you look at the amount of big schools in our league,,, you would think the all conference stud would get a ride to a d1 school...he finally "found" a school that would pay his way and its a community college..the all conference players in football are usually attending much nicer schools for free,,.. Wog, Why do you think that is? There are around 120 DI football schools, each with 85 scholarships, which makes 10,200 total scholarships in DI football at any given time. There's around 300 DI Baseball schools, each with 11.7 scholarships. That's 3,510 total scholarships at any given time. My teams at UCLA usually carried around 35 guys including redshirts. The football team carried I think around 105 total, including redshirts. 11.7 scholarships only covers 33% of the total cost of school for the baseball team. 85 covers 81% of a football team. With 6,690 more scholarships in DI football than baseball, who do you think has the better odds of getting a scholarship? I doubt it is about the area, school, or conference as much as it is the odds of getting a college baseball scholarship. It is about the number of scholarships and roster size, plain and simple. Unfortunately not every active roster player can have a scholarship in baseball the way they do in football, so sometimes guys have to go to JUCO because they can't afford a 25% or 50% ride.

I got informed when i watched my other kid stop on a dime when he started lifting...tightening muscle around open growth plates is not reccomended ,,aint worth it..talked to too many physical therapists on this one..AT LEAST 16 minimal age How do you know that he would have grown any more had he not lifted? How tall are you? How tall is the kid's mother?

That is my point Wog...you never really know what could have been, yet you are basing your decision on what could have been. Again, how tall are you and your son's mother? It is a valid question.

I played with a kid whose dad was 6'8" and mom was 5'1". He was always hoping for a growth spurt but he never got above 5'9". That's just the way the cookie crumbles...

Wog,
This is my sons second year in athletic weights. He is 17. Our school has a program that was designed by an ex college strength coach and ex 49er. It is strength and speed training. They make each kid get certified to make sure they are using proper form before they let them go through the workouts.
I will say that this has helped him more then I could explain. He has gotten faster and stronger. It could only help his game.
I too was concerned about strength training and have talked to numerous people about it, including a very good friend who has a degree in kinieseolgy and bio mechanics. He said as long as he was doing things correctly and not trying to over lift. He would be fine. In fact he said what will happen is his body will start recruiting new muscle fiber which will help him as he gets older.
He also takes supplements that I have ran by his doctor and my doctor, who couldn't say that they would help him but they did say that they wouldn't hurt him as long as he didn't take more then he should.
My son loves the weight room and what it is doing for him.
I grew up working on a small farm and was throwing around hay bales and lifting bags of feed as long as I could remember. i'm sure there are kids who have grown up on bigger farms doing twice the lifting I was doing and I'm sure we weren't using propr technique.
I would love to buy some wood and have him split it all like I use to have to do.

He is 15 a Freshman, current bench is 175 (for 5 reps) and deadlift of about 210 for 5 reps. I think he's a bit topped out at bench right now whereas dead I see him getting to 230 or so before we start a new cycle. The limiting factor on dead will be grip before it's legs. He's not doing anything remarkable, just stronger at those lifts than his classmates, but not quite up there with the Sr. kids. Next summer in football if you bench I think 225 you get a shirt. Also an award for Power Clean which is why we are just working dead for now. At the school the football program (and baseball too if they want) are trained by Doug Hix/Playfast. One of the guys that helps out with training was a friend of your bro's at UCLA. At home and during baseball we are going to do a very simple program by Pavel Tsatsouline called Power to the People because it's fast and quick and builds strength quickly. This is just until football weights start and its mostly to build a base. If you play the video at this link you'll see a bunch of NFL and want-to-be NFL guys working out at our school. Very motivating for the kids who see the pro's doing the same stuff (of course at higher speed, and ridiculous strength). Ted Williams worked incessantly on his strength when he played. He would do fingertip pushups, squeeze tennis balls, do sit ups...any number of things to get him stronger. I've read both of his biographies, 'Hitter' and 'Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero,' and they both talk about this.
Do you think if Ted and Stan played today they would be on a weight program?

why? they didnt have weights back then? its mechanics for hitting you know that..I watched my kid mimmick shefields extreme tip and rip and I never seen a ball travel so far for a kid his size...it all clicked perfectly..muscles wont do that...
refering to your brothers question,,doe size make him a better ballplayer?
do you take the six foot 2 shortstop who can get his glove 11 feet off the ground or the five foot 8 guy who gets up 9 and a half feet..the two being equal hitters and fielders ,,who do you take?
