I remember talking to some Puerto Ricans that played on my summer team.
They were saying that the signing bonus amount fell tremendously if they were older than 16, I could imagine the same would go for the Dominican Republic which could make a big difference to players in a third world country like that.
I think they're equally bad. I wonder how many players have lied about their age that haven't been caught?

How awesome is Deadspin's entire article.
Fausto Carmona is not Fausto Carmona
"He is Roberto Hernandez Heredia. That is all."

When Fausto was in AA ball at Akron he used to call our house phone all the time because we had some of dominican players staying with us on the host family program. They were all pretty tight with Carmona.
Anyway I can report Fausto's Caller ID was definitely the fake name!!!

This was 2004 and I had 3 DR players and 1 from San Diego/Tijuana staying at the house (my wife being fluent Spanish was less common up there). My kids were little and we had this big old house on 3 acres, plus the NY Penn League season is only about 4 mos. or so. We only did this for two years before heading to San Diego, but man that was just about as much fun as you can imagine. The kids playing wiffle ball, and shooting hoops with these guys most afternoons, hanging out after the games, and a couple of road trips. Best one was to Batavia where there Scrappers clinched their playoff birth. One of the guys staying with us got some major league time. Played in Chris Colabello's league last year before Cleveland signed him late in the year for AAA (probably after 40-man). Anyway, the ONLY guy who called our house all the time was Fausto, he was really tight with one of the guys. Honestly until this story came out I'd forgotten all about it, but I swear at least 50 times I remember seeing caller id and yelling out for one of the guys.
