What might have surprised me the most about Kharma's response was that he made his points without even reading the article. I thought these points were interesting. We’ve all seen the numbers: African-Americans made up about 8.5 percent of the players in the majors last year, down from 18 percent 20 years earlier. There are fewer African-American starting pitchers now than there were 50 years ago.
The decline is often explained away by a combination of cultural shifts and economics.
¶ Baseball is a father-son sport. Many black fathers, for a variety of reasons, are not in their sons’ lives.
¶ Baseball, with the cost of equipment and travel for competition, is an expensive sport.
¶ Baseball is a sport of skill more than athleticism, and the skills must be learned early on in youth systems that may be beyond the reach of those who live in economically depressed areas.
¶ Basketball and football have siphoned off top black athletes. |

Well soccer was already a very integral sport for Hispanics, so the chances of baseball having an impact were rather low. I've been to Europe, and it's not exactly like the Front National think it is. Muslims in the U.S. have been better assimilated into the country than they have been in Europe. European policies didn't encourage assimilation, so that's why you see the economically marginalized Muslim communities in Tower Hamlets in London and in the Banliueue in Paris. Of course that will cause problems. Marseille has a large Muslim and Jewish population and there haven't been too many problems there. Sorry for going off topic, but what I really want to know is why and specifically when African-American Athletes began to start playing football and basketball more often and less baseball.

Baseball is hard and boring. Slow paced. Hell the white kids don;t like it either. They prefer soccer and or football and or basketball and or a track event and or golf and or just about anything else but baseball.
Its not a race issue. Its a slow paced, boring, poor practice coaches, high cost sport. The days of playing 30 games in a rec league for 50 bucks is long long long gone for the guys who didnt get teaching certificates and coach select baseball for a living.

As a lefty who took forever on the mound, I know exactly what you mean SB. You also can't forget about lacrosse. Its popularity is growing all across the country unfortunately.

Jet I went in and read the article. There is nothing new here. The lack of participation of Hispanics in youth baseball is the story. If you index the population of blacks vs their participation in youth baseball it is statistically significant. If you index the Hispanic population vs their participation in youth baseball it is not even on the chart. I believe Hispanics are a bigger percentage of the population than blacks. Despite all it's problems baseball has been a unifying force historically. That no longer appears to be the case. I won't comment on Muslims because of the fragile nature of our ASMI lurkers here . I'll just say that you don't have to spend more than a day in Europe to see that they are going to have major problem with Muslims. We are heading on the same path. Youth baseball is an answer. Kharma We dont need any more black or muslim anything and thats a fact! Trolling challenge accepted... Do you prefer bigot or ignoramus? |
