I had an old PM from another site with Beemax asking about ways I could learn about scouting. He suggested that I post on the site asking the same questions, but I never did primarily because I'd made similar posts previously and only received limited suggestions. Anyway, now I bring my post to the folks on this board.....many of whom may have seen my prior posts.
Anyway, basically, I'm looking to learn more about scouting. I've read the books I can get my hands on (Dollar Sign on the Muscle, Prophet of the Sandlots, etc) and I've read all the articles about scouting I can find. But these give more of a "day in the life" of a scout than actual nuts and bolts about how they do what they do. This knowledge of how scouts go about their jobs is what I'm looking for, and there just aren't that many resources available. So I'm wondering if any of the posters here might have suggestions or ideas.
I know there is scout school, but I'm pretty sure you have to be sponsored by an MLB org. I also know there are classes online, but I've heard differing opinions. I also know some organizations have manuals for scouting, and I'd love to get my hands on one of those (for personal use only, of course). If anyone can help out, that would be great, or if anyone has other suggestions, books, articles, etc that might help, please let me know.
Also, I live in Richmond, VA, so if anyone happens to know any scouts in this area that might be willing to talk, please let me know. Also, just to clarify, I'm just looking for knowledge, I'm not looking for a scouting job (although I wouldn't scoff at that either). But I'm really just looking for an opportunity to learn. Thanks in advance for any help
