Its unfortunate that there aren't more posts here.... so I decided to make this thread
what is the best play you ever made in the field?
I'll start. As a center fielder I have a bunch to choose from, but this one stands out for me.
Just last year. My fall team was playing pretty much our rival team. We kept matching up vs these guys during tournaments and eventually joined this league we had set up. Every game against them was always a good battle.
Anyway, it was the top of the 6th (we play 7) there were two outs and they had runners on 2nd and 3rd. We were up by only 1 run. It was at night under the lights and it was getting wet. I remember my cleats were getting really wet.
So since I'm a fast guy, I like to play shallow and dare the hitters to hit it over my head. Our pitcher was throwing hard and their guys were late because our closer throws pretty hard. The guy hits the ball. Everyone starts screaming. There dugout was yelling. The fans were yelling. The base runners were jogging into home (from what I heard). I ran forever to get this ball. All I remember is that I got an amazing jump. I ran the ball down to the fence. I caught it, and as I caught it, I thought to myself, "fence." I made the catch reaching out, took one step and smashed into the metal fence right on the pole. I got nocked back. I held my glove up then took a bit to get up. I got bruised up pretty bad, but it was all good because I made the catch.
That catch is something I will never forget. It's on film somewhere, but its somewhat blurry.

Ok.... best defensive play you ever made was......

Not sure if one sticks out from the others but I can speak for some of my favorite plays to make:
At 3B, any time I had to charge a ball was a treat, especially when I had to barehand the ball...some good memories there.
At 1B, any time I executed a pick or robbed a guy of extra bases was always fun.
If you work hard at your defense you will greatly help your team even if you aren't swinging the bat well. Take pride in it and you can really enjoy both sides of the game.

While I've had my share of pitching perfect games, and turning DP's, and diving for balls...........The best "play" I ever made was during an astrological alignment of the ALL the Stars.........
I positioned my then 11yo DD right infront of 2nd base against a dead pull hitter with a lighting fast runners at 1st and 2nd who's coach is known for running on EVERY pitch in rec ball........
True story........
We're playing a team with kids that LOVE to run on unwitting catchers and a coach that LOVES to send them........
Circumstances had it that they had runners on 1st and 2nd, and this giant 12yo 4 hitter is at the plate who pulls everything.........
So I put my DD standing directly infront of the corner of the second base bag........
At the moment of the first pitch to this 4 hitter.......ALL the stars in the universe lined up........AND.........
The 4 hitter hit a rocket line drive.......SO hard that it scared my DD to death........She flinched backwards......Tripped on the bag..........Stuck her glove out and caught the ball while falling on her ASS to SIT on 2nd base........While the runner at 1st NEVER looked......Just kept running.......Right into the glove of my DD holding the ball sitting on 2nd base.........
Triple play in the blink of an eye..........
Croud goes wild.........My DD has NO IDEA what just happened......And starts crying, scared and embarrassed that she fell on her ass in front of everyone.........
To this day I'm not sure she understands the significance of that moment in time..........

I've had a couple from catcher.
I. In a high school game with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the 7th the batter foul tipped a pitch off of my glove which gave the ball enough hang time for me to reach forward with my throwing hand and catch it about 6" off of the ground for the final out of the game. (Okay, so it's not that cool but if you were a catcher you'd appreciate it.)
The best thing about this was that it was on the news that night during the highlights of our game. I never saw it but I had several people telling me about it.
II. In another high school game, there was a pop up behind home plate. I didn't find the ball until it was about on its way down so I had to sprint to the backstop near the corner of the dugout. Somehow while on a dead sprint I realized the wind was going to blow the ball right into the fence. From my sprint, I scaled the fence, catching the ball right above the spot on the fence the ball was about to touch. To add to the tale, my right cleat held onto the fence pretty well as I was coming down. Since that was the third out of the inning, I hobbled to the bench while everyone congratulated me. The only thing I could think about was how effed my ankle was.
That play happened early in game one of a double header so I played the rest of the game and game two. I had sprained an ankle before but this time was way worse than any I had experienced. I went to get it checked out sometime that night to be told it was just a sprain. I sat out of games for only a few days since we were about to head into post season play and were playing for a higher seed in our substate region.
I had problems with that ankle for months after it happened so I went to see the trainer at my college about it since it would swell a little sometimes at the end of practices. Getting physical therapy for it was a nice way to get out of practices though.
III. This one was in a practice back in high school as well... It was an easy day at practice, mostly just ground balls/fly balls for us. One coach at the lf foul line was hitting fly balls to the outfielders and occasionally a pop up for me since I was shagging for him. He hit a pop up that was unrealistically far but it was one of the mile high variety. When I got to the warning track the ball hit on the top of the fence, bouncing almost straight up but away from the field about three feet. I jumped the eight foot tall fence and caught the ball with my entire body from the waist up hanging over the fence, while somehow keeping myself from tipping over and face planting on the other side.
None of the infielders saw it but every single outfielder went ape sh!t.

A few weeks ago I threw one out from RF after catching a flyball and throwing quickly to 1B.

A few weeks ago I threw one out from RF after catching a flyball and throwing quickly to 1B. I hate that play as a hitter especially a right handed hitter. I've never had this happen to me because I'm fast, but imagine a nice oppo line drive then bam. No hit when you had a nice one.

Senior in high school. First inning against conference rivals. Lead off hitter got a base hit.....I threw him out stealing. Second batter hit a triple.....I picked him off 3rd. Third batter walked.....I picked him off first.

At this point in time we had played so many different versions of flip pepper games that when the gopher got loose amongst all my macho cohorts making them look like a group of little girls I calmly stepped over and backhand ulnar flipped the little feller over the fence and into an adjoining field like it was nut’n!
