I am SURE that most of you have a different view of this than others, but I'd like to get your thoughts:
One of the best high school coaches I ever saw had an interesting way of weeding out infielders from outfielders. When they would come in as freshman, he would give a simple test to separate the two:
He would line up all the freshman at shortstop and take away their gloves. He would stand about 25 feet away with a fungo and hit a one-hopper right at them. The players had to put their hands behind their backs, 'chest up' to the ball to block it, then pick it up with their bare hand and throw it to first.
Those who flinched went to the outfield. Those that didn't were infielders ;D True story.
What do you think about that? How many parents today would let something like that stand if they knew about it? Do you think it is an effective way of weeding out infielders and outfielders?

Sounds like his infielders, starting at 1B were . . . 3rd baseman, 3rd baseman, 3rd baseman, 3rd baseman.

In HS playing 3rd during a practice we were taking throws from center.. I let a one hopper get by me.. Warning from coach.. I let the next one get by me.. Coach made me take off my glove and use my bare hands.. Missed that one too.. Coach made me put my hands behind my back.. Said if I didn't stop the ball that I'd be off the team.. I blocked it like a catcher... Redemption! ;D But it got the point across..
