I know that most players usually have some sort of issue with their coaches, be it minor or major. You can double that for parents ;D
For all those differences, however, isn't there one coach that sticks out to you as the best you/your kid played for?
I had the opportunity to play for some well respected and well known coaches, and a few stick out to me in particular:
Gary Adams: 'Skip' recruited me to UCLA and I played for him his final 2 years at the school. While there are many things that he did as a coach that I would never do, he was/is like a grandfather to me, and I still speak with him today. As coaches go, there were many IMO that were better at teaching the game and managing it, but he is well respected and a great person.
Randy Knorr: Randy was my manager with the Potomac Nationals in the Carolina League in 2007. He's an ex-catcher with a World Series ring to boot. IMO he was the best all-around coach I ever played for.
He would take time during BP to go around to each player and interact with them, be it to teach or to gain a feeling of how they were doing. I greatly appreciated that, especially as he was my manager in the season that I lost my father.
He would often share stories with us before we would stretch about playing in the big leagues. The wisdom he carried always kept everyone at attention.
As a manager, he had the perfect balance IMO of allowing us to perform while always finding a teachable moment during a game. I never felt like I had to look over my shoulder when I played for him. His laid back demeanor benefited all of us.
Last year he was the manager in Harrisburg (AA). I loved playing for him and hope that one day he will get to run a big league club.
I'd like to hear from all of you who the best coach you had was and why. He doesn't have to be a big leaguer or a college coach, either...
