We all know the fans get the vote, and that's fine, but who would you say is the most deserving for the start at each position in this year's All-Star Game:
American League
Catcher, shortstop, and the starting pitcher were the toughest calls for me. I took Mauer over Pierzynski because he's a better defender and nobody likes AJ.
Shortstop was tough because Jeter has the pedigree and is having a good year, although Asdrubal Cabrera continues to impress. Andrus strikes out less, walks more, scores more, steals more and drives in more than Jeter, so he's my pick.
Starting pitcher is a toss up between Chris Sale and Verlander. I give the edge to Verlander because of his greatness last year. Both will make the team no doubt, but I think the reigning Cy Young and MVP winner who has a 2.52 ERA deserves the nod today.
Third base was a bit of a tough call between Beltre and Miguel Cabrera, but Beltre is such a better defender he should get the start.
National League
The NL has 5 outfielders that are all starters in my book, with Melky Cabrera on the outside looking in due to the power of the others. Starlin Castro gets the nod over Furcal and Ian Desmond, who are deserving as well.
I thought about Strasburg for the starting spot, but after a perfect game and years of being under-appreciated, its Matt Cain's turn.
Had Aroldis not blown a few of his last save opportunities, he would have had the nod over Kimbrel, but not today.
What do you guys think? What would your All-Star starters look like if the game were held today?
