Hey guys,,, Real quick question. What is a good program routine for my teenage son who pitches and also plays the field. He's not playing right now the season is over. Is there ever a time when a teen should be focused on strength rather than explosiveness? Sorry if these are simple questions. Thanks

Thanks honestly,,if i had control of my son i would NEVER let him lift weighst UNTIL he was fully mature..your kid will stay in baseball longer because of explosive fast twitch muscles rather than hul hogan strength..lay off the weights imo

Thanks for the reply wogdoggy,,, When we lift we do real light weight stuff. I know I asked if they should ever try lifting just for stength, but don't worry we haven't done that yet. Again thanks for the reply.

Will Wog ever answer the questions asked in another thread?
Will he ever not rant against lifting weights?
Get the kids off the farm, they might mess themselves up good like doing hard labor.

Get the kids off the farm, they might mess themselves up good like doing hard labor. what do you want me to answer? he has tendonitis in the elbow and has been going to physical thereapy.its an OVERUSE injury.I feel it came from lifting weights although it may have came from lifting weights AND playing golf,,or it couls have came from just playing golf.the kid will never admit that it came from weight lifting,,right now he is doing some specialty exercises at the pt.he is wearing something on his elbow that holds the muscles tendents? i dont know? in place so they can refuse? i will ALWAYS rant AGAINST weight lifting for high school students..many coaches feel "strength training " will improve their athletes make them stronger giving them a better chance to win and keep their jobs..BOTTOM LINE {MINE} coaches dont know when each kid is grown, mature. or capable of lifting weights without potentially damaging themselves.MOST kids are NOT mature physically in high school.I dont think weightlifting makes that much of a difference on how FAST you throw or how FAR and hard you hit a baseball..I actually think weight training for baseball can ROB kids of their fast twitch muscles ..which i'll take anyday of the week.

Wog, would you suggest maybe doing some resistance band training as a substitute for weight lifting? Just wondering,,, because I don't see much of a problem with resistance band or even lightweight and I mean lightweight as in 2 to 3 lbs dumbells for shoulders just to keep it in shape?

As to whether or not you are against lifting, or lifting improperly. Which you alluded to was the main cause of this overuse injury. But what is overuse? Usually is a lack of conditioning before hand. You can rant against weight lifting all you want, but the amount of players who have improved their games with lifting and had little to no side effects leans heavily in my favor. And your last comment further supports my point. Lifting properly doesn't rob you of your fast twitch. Nope. No sir. Not possible. Lifting improperly may. Perhaps you should worry more about doing it right than simply not doing it at all?

And another thing, 'most kids are not mature to lift weights'....ok, what about the ones that do hard labor at young ages? Should they not even pick up rakes anymore?
What about the farm boys? Who will save them? They abuse their bodies far more than any weight lifting program will.
Do it right and there won't be problems. Shying away in fear is limiting potential.

I couldn't agree with Cosmo more on this issue.
Questions for Wog:
Were you in the weightroom with your son to observe how he was lifting?
Would you feel comfortable putting together a weight training program for an adult who has never lifted? Could you supervise and teach them to lift properly?

Cosmo So what types of weight training do you reco that teens do out there in Farmville? What is your view of Dr Marshall's specific to pitching program? Kharma Haven't read it all. Link? As for me, compound lifts done with moderately heavy weight lifted explosively. Plus some tricks up my sleeve.

Anything on the core or legs? Those are important too.

Newton was messed up long before it fully went down the drain, but I digress.
But I'll bite on what the legs do in the Marshall Motion.
You have said that Marshall wants pitchers to throw from basically the same position as track sprinters (paraphrasing). Doesn't leg strength have any affect on that too? I've never seen a world class sprinter with chicken legs.
